Eighteen Days With Syrian Rebels

A stunning, provocative photo essay by Goran Tomasevic who writes:

Pictures must show the reality of the war in Syria and that’s why I wanted to be as close as I could to the fighters to the very front line to show exactly what they are doing, their emotions, how they run and fire weapons and also how they react to incoming shells. There is a certain amount of risk and you need to take all necessary precautions but if you want to do tell the true story, you have to be there.

We organized everything before entering Syria so members of the Free Syrian Army were waiting for us on the other side of the border. As soon as we crossed we went to a farm which was the rebel base where Arab-speaking journalist Hadeel Al Shalchi spoke with the local commander. On the same day that we crossed the border we managed to get to the front line in Aleppo.

Image: A member of the Free Syrian Army is hit by shrapnel in Aleppo.

It would be this nerd’s absolute dream come true if books grew on trees. But until that happens, Berlin has found a brilliant Giving Tree-esque solution, using fallen trees’ trunks as a free book exchange. Part of the BookCrossing book swap club, which brings free books to public spaces around the globe based on their idea of building the World’s Library! Neighborhood residents are welcome to leave a book they loved, or take one from the plastic protected hutches cut into the tree trunks.

Love love love it!

“You should sign up for this,” my sister said, showing me an article about a bookstore that doubles as a matchmaking service. At the Brooklyn indie, lovelorn bookworms choose their prospective romantic interests based on their list of favorite authors pinned to a cork board. The article went on to point out that women never wrote down Jack Kerouac as one of their coveted authors.

My decade-long enamor with the poets and writers of the Beat Generation was about to pay off. As the only woman who adored Kerouac, I would be the vixen of the literary matchmaking board.

At the Millions, Stephanie Nikolopoulos on the Jack Kerouac gender divide.

While interning at the American Library in Paris a few summers ago, I came across this issue of Library Journal from 1950. This is sweet, beautiful proof that we’ve been worried about new media making reading obsolete for oh … ever.
